Dear crafty reader,
Have you ever come across something (e.g., a book, a song, a magazine) that for some reason, no matter how hard you look, you can’t seem to get your hands on it? I’ve been consumed this week with trying to find an elusive compilation album from 1995 titled, Spirit of ‘73: Rock For Choice.
How did I find myself on this quest? I found a cover of the disco hit, “If I Can’t Have You” by 90’s alternative band, Eve’s Plum - only to find out the only place this song exists is on this album!1 And I would really like to listen to the whole album! Even our extensive library network in our state doesn’t have a copy. I’m floored. Looks like the only way I can listen to it, in its entirety, is by purchasing it. How often does that happen?!
Also, we had some Greek food. And I could really go for some Korean friend chicken with a side of tteokbokki.
Anyway, I had a rabbit-hole of a week while surfing the net. Hence the spacey roundup this week.
Stay golden,
M
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) dirs. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Honestly - I really, really liked. But don’t take my word for it because kids made up most of the audience in the theatre that day. Who are, I believe, the intended demographic and if this is true, then it would explain the tone, humor, and amount of peril in this latest video-game to motion picture adaptation. This is an Illumination flick, i.e., the same company that birthed the Minions. Illumination does light-hearted, silly, slapstick fun really well. Do not expect anything more from it and you will have a great time at the movies! The musical blending of Nintendo and cinematic score, the update to Princess Peach’s player profile2, and all the 80’s references did it for me. Highly recommend! Below you will find the official trailer as well as a hilarious promotional clip with great 80’s energy.
No surprise here - The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Perfect background music while you’re checking things off your to-do list around the house or office. An enthralling soundtrack for any day of the week. I look forward to listening to all the lo-fi/chillhop/jazzhop covers of this soundtrack to flood YouTube.
Joan Jett and her Blackhearts apparently like a good cover, and I can dig it. (Forgive me for showing up late to the party.) Here are a couple I discovered and really liked: a cover of Donovan’s 60’s anthem, “Season of the Witch” and a cover of Richard O’Brien’s opener to his ultra-campy musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Incredible.
And because I can’t go a week without a healthy serving of jazzy, lounge tunes… Funny thing is, I don’t speak French. But, I am actually 95 years old on the inside so this music must be speaking to something deep inside me? Just a theory. Below are 2 songs perfect for any weekend breakfast or brunch scene.
(Mostly) vegan bolognese, adapted from The Cheeky Chickpea.3 I will be making this again and again, guaranteed. I love that the recipe yields so many servings and in the end, you have this humongous, gorgeous pot of fragrant hearty sauce that could top any starch or grain. I made with it Trader Joe's Beef-less Ground Beef. *chef's kiss*
Figuring out how I can be a helpful creative assistant to my very talented cousin, Sonia, as she builds her spiritual business, Soulful Sight.4
Currently (slowly) reading: Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Agrippa.
A podcast about death.
A podcast about aging millennials.
“Cordelia’s Bookclub” - We are currently reading and discussing Healing Developmental Trauma: How Early Trauma Affects Self-Regulation, Self-Image, and the Capacity for Relationship by Laurence Heller, Ph.D. and Aline LaPierre, Psy.D. And look, it’s quite a heavy lift of a read so no worries if you just want to read portions of it. Respect.
And, as always, thank you for reading this week’s roundup post.
Until we round again,
M
Granted, I heard the cover on YouTube but this upload is the only recording available online!!
I know Peach has gotten a few updates since the 80’s but this version of her seems to be the best one yet!
I ended up using beef bouillon because that is the only bouillon I have in my pantry. Oops. Still very veg forward though in flavor!

Love the Léo Marjane. Humming is so underrated
That “Season Of The Witch” cover is *chef’s kiss*!
